Chapter 5
The Dreaded P.E. Class
Doyle took one sip of the milk he bought before school began and hoped a red rash would quickly multiply over his body. He couldn’t take Dontavious and Taiwan’s abuse again.
He sauntered down “B” hall. Each step felt like his feet were stuck in concrete. For him this was the worst time of the day. The day before Dontavious had him in a two finger neck vise. Yesterday using his thumb and index fingers Dontavious locked his hand around Doyle’s throat and slammed him against a locker in the boy’s gym dressing room, then proceeded to give him a wedgie as he tried unsuccessfully to pants him. Thanks to his trusty belt that attempt had been foiled.
Even before Dontavious and Taiwan got kicked out of athletics and moved into P.E., they had still been picked on him every chance they got.
Doyle really wasn’t very good at anything athletic, which was ironic since his dad and brothers lived for sports. He hated playing “duck, duck, goose” because He usually lost.

Basketball, volleyball, and football weren’t his games either. His mom told him he would find his sport one day and often they went bowling. He was excited to learn that they would be bowling later in the year. Maybe his mom would be right. But for right now it was time for him to become a champion actor.
“Coach Williams, I’m feeling all sick. I have a rash and….” He unbuttoned the top buttons on his shirt to expose the rash but there wasn’t any.
“Naah, we’re not going to play the “I-can’t-dress-out-today-Coach-game” again today, Wesley. Go suit up. I don’t see any rash. Go now!” he bellowed.
“But Coach I have a highly contagious disease. Anyone who gets too close to me will break out in welts. Puss will ooze out all over the place. Any induced contact will cause problems with dermatitis. This dreaded disease comes from….”
“Shut-it-up. Put a cork in it. It’s always something isn’t it Doyle? You either have ingrown toenails, or problems with your lactose-intolerance issues. Why don’t you write a book,. 101 Ways to get out of Dressing Out for P.E.”
“Yes Sir, Coach. That sounds like a good idea. Maybe I …..”
“I said put a cork in it. Get dressed NOW!!!” his coach yelled.
He dreaded walking into the dressing room. Of course, Taiwan and Dontavious were waiting for him.
